Menka Kumari, Our Shining star

Menka joined us in the Blind welfare Society in the year 2018. She hails from Chapra district of Bihar and has been living with low vision since her birth. When her father Jaynarayan Mehto came to BWS, he told the staff at the society that their Daughter continuously lives in depression and has given up any possible hope of ever being independent or resuming her education.
The trained staff at the hostel told Menka’s father about the special provision which CBSE board has for the blind girls to appear directly in class X examinations. Menka’s parents were also appraised about mobility training and about technologies such as Braille, screen reading software and other useful assistive devices available for visually impaired people, so that they could be independent and efficient in their day to day lives.

She is pursuing her graduation from JDM College of Delhi University. All of us at the BWS are rightly proud of Menka’s achievements. Menka wants to become a teacher after completing her education, and is passionate about the rights of disabled children. “Not a single blind child should be out of school. Education is the only way to get the lost vision back.” Menka’s success story is a great example of education can lead people to empowerment and liberation. It shows how children who suffer from blindness can become a transformative force in the community, especially for those are being deprived of their rights.
